After graduating from the Film Academy of Miroslav Ondříček in Písek Jan began working with the production company Lucky Man Films, where he shot several commercials (especially non-commercial and charity spots – his Aero Godzilla cinema theme song won the Golden Nutcracker in 2014). In addition to working on his own film projects, he also works on radio – he made his debut with the original comedy play Garage Cooperative Meeting (2015). His professional film debut, the short film Figurant (2019) starring Denis Lavant, was screened at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas.
Together with Tomáš Pavlíček, he wrote and directed the feature film horror comedy Přišla v noci, which received nine Czech Lion nominations (where it won two for Best Actress and Best Director) and five Czech Film Critics Awards nominations (where it won three for Best Actress, Director and Film).
